Simple Home Remedy For Constipation
Are you looking for Home Remedy For Constipation?
But first, how best can constipation be defined? Constipation is defined as the passage of hard stool in bowel movements that are less frequent than is normal for an individual. It is, therefore, a subjective measure and this has led to an overuse of laxatives by the general public due to the misdiagnosis of various conditions.
Did you know that a temporary reduced frequency of bowel movements is not constipation per se ? This is because the body’s functions are dynamic and responsive to a number of factors.
If you do not suffer from constipation but would like to take steps to prevent it, these home remedies for constipation can help, in addition to regular activity such as brisk walking. Diet and lifestyle are key determinants of how your body works.
What Causes Constipation?
Constipation may result from a number of reasons, which are loosely grouped into three categories that present varying degrees of control. A number of factors are also linked to the unconsciously controlled movement of the bowel. These include ignoring the urge to empty the bowels (which is known as the gastro colic reflex).
This provides more time for water to be drawn back into the body from the bowel, hence hardening it.
Stress or anxiety may suppress the gastro colic reflex, and some drugs such as morphine-based painkillers may reduce the overall motility of the bowel as a side effect.
Pregnancy may also cause constipation due to the compression of the mother’s organs.
Diet and lifestyle changes are key to overcoming constipation.
The most common cause of constipation is linked to lifestyle choices, especially our diet.
This latter category may include among others:
a diet that is low in fibre
inadequate water intake
being immobile for a significantly long period
not following an exercise routine and overindulgence
In minor cases, before reaching for the medicine cabinet, there are a number of home remedies for constipation that may provide the much needed relief that I have listed below here for you.
Number One Home Remedy For Constipation is: Water Intake.
Water is very important. Other drinks such as fruit juices (preferable freshly prepared) may also count. However, tea, coffee – due to their caffeine content – and alcoholic drinks may actually reverse the desired effect by causing the body to lose more water.
Number Two Home Remedy For Constipation Is: Fibre Intake
In addition to regular water intake, increasing your fibre intake will aid the passage of stool. There are two types of fibre – soluble and insoluble.
Soluble Fibre may be found in dried fruits such as prunes (dried plums), dried figs and flaxseeds which are soaked overnight. There are bottled prune juice remedies made for children. Fruit compote which is prepared by slow-cooking fruit in water, sugar and spices provides fast relief.
Insoluble Fibre on the other hand may be found in whole grains such as bran, brown rice and whole meal bread. Fruits and vegetables are al so rich in these. Freshly prepared pineapple juice, free from additives and drank on an empty stomach provides a high water and fibre content.
The tamarind fruit is a good remedy for constipation. The fruit’s sweet and acidic pulp which resides in long, brown and brittle irregularly shaped pods, may also be sucked off the seeds. Alternatively, it may be prepared into a condiment by boiling in water and adding a little sugar to taste. Chili powder may be added if a hot sauce is preferred. This may then be eaten with slices of sweet, ripe pineapple, a common snack in Mauritius, which is also a relatively healthy alternative to a processed sugary snack if you have a sweet
tooth.
The papaya (or paw paw) fruit contains digestive enzymes called papain that break down proteins, hence it is used commercially to prepare meat tenderizers.
It follows, then that a generous serving of papaya may make an excellent choice for breakfast after overindulging in barbecued meat. However, admittedly, my first choice would be a herbal drink that is prepared from yet undetermined plant by a person who is more knowledgeable about herbs.
